What The Cat from "Alice in Wonderland" Can Teach the Church
Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to walk form here? The Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to. Alice: I don't much care where. The Cat: Then it doesn't much matter which way you walk. That's it in a nutshell, isn't it? The church doesn't know where it's going. That is, we have no real sense off who, what and for what the church is. Therefore, we end u p walking hither and yon to no apparent result. Some wander into a legalism of behavior or truth, others into a mindless, sentimental devotionalism, and yet others into fundamentalistic political ideologizations of the faith of left, right or something else. And at this point the Cat is right: "it doesn't matter which way you walk" since none of these ways point to the genuine gospel of the kingdom of God.
