What The Cat from "Alice in Wonderland" Can Teach the Church
Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to walk form here?
The Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don't much care where.
The Cat: Then it doesn't much matter which way you walk.
That's it in a nutshell, isn't it? The church doesn't know where it's going. That is, we have no real sense off who, what and for what the church is. Therefore, we end up walking hither and yon to no apparent result. Some wander into a legalism of behavior or truth, others into a mindless, sentimental devotionalism, and yet others into fundamentalistic political ideologizations of the faith of left, right or something else. And at this point the Cat is right: "it doesn't matter which way you walk" since none of these ways point to the genuine gospel of the kingdom of God.
