Theological Journal - Aoril1: April Fools
Do you know these
authors and their famous books?
-One feared those who would ban
books. One feared there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no
one who wanted to read one.
-One feared those who would
deprive us of information. The other feared those who would give us so much
that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism.
-One feared that the truth would
be concealed from us. The other feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of
irrelevance.
-The first feared we would
become a captive culture. The second feared we would become a trivial culture,
preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the
centrifugal bumblepuppy.
-As one remarked in his book,
people are controlled by inflicting pain. In the other’s book, people are
controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, one feared that what we fear will
ruin us. The other feared that what we desire will ruin us.
Do you know “fools” in
either of these categories?
Which
kind of “fool” are you?
I
saw a t-shirt in the mall once. On the front it read “I’m a fool for Christ.”
As the wearer walked past, I could see the back of it read “Who’s fool are
you?”
Good
question, don’t you think?
