The Church Year and the Lectionary Commentary – The 4th Sunday of Easter (Day 4)
John 10:11-18
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd
lays down his life for the sheep. 12 When the hired hand sees
the wolf coming, he leaves the sheep and runs away. That’s because he isn’t the
shepherd; the sheep aren’t really his. So the wolf attacks the sheep and
scatters them. 13 He’s only a hired hand and the sheep don’t matter to him.14 “I am the good shepherd. I know my own sheep and they know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. I give up my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that don’t belong to this sheep pen. I must lead them too. They will listen to my voice and there will be one flock, with one shepherd.
17 “This is why the Father loves me: I give up my life so that I can take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I give it up because I want to. I have the right to give it up, and I have the right to take it up again. I received this commandment from my Father.”
The
Good Shepherd lays down his life for and knows his own sheep. This is why the Father loves him. As his
sheep, we are a matter of life and death to him and he mediates his own
relationship with the Father to us! Again
there is a beguiling simplicity to John’s writing and teaching here.
Let’s
hear the passage again as Eugene Peterson renders it in The Message and perhaps his translation will help us revisit this
passage in fresh ways.
14-18"I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep and my own sheep know me. In the same way, the Father knows me and I know the Father. I put the sheep before myself, sacrificing myself if necessary. You need to know that I have other sheep in addition to those in this pen. I need to gather and bring them, too. They'll also recognize my voice. Then it will be one flock, one Shepherd. This is why the Father loves me: because I freely lay down my life. And so I am free to take it up again. No one takes it from me. I lay it down of my own free will. I have the right to lay it down; I also have the right to take it up again. I received this authority personally from my Father."
